Although sometimes presented as dark and violent, her earliest incarnation as a figure of annihilation still has some influence, while more complex Tantric beliefs sometimes extend her role so far as to be the Ultimate Reality (Brahman) and Source of Being. Finally, the comparatively recent devotional movement largely conceives of Kali as a straightforwardly benevolent mother-goddess. Therefore, as with her association with the Deva (god) Shiva, Kali is associated with many Devis (goddesses) - Durga, Bhadrakali, Bhavani, Sati, Rudrani, Parvati, Chinnamasta, Chamunda, Kamakshi or kamakhya, Uma, Meenakshi, Himavanti, Kumari and  Tara. These names, if repeated, are believed to give special power to the worshipper.

Kâlî, la Noire est, dans l'hindouisme, la déesse du Temps, de mort et de délivrance, mère destructrice et créatrice. C'est l'aspect féroce de la Devî, la déesse suprême, qui est fondamentale à toutes autres déités hindoues. Kâlî était déjà présente dans les Veda, comme étant une des sept langues de feu du dieu Agni (la même racine que le mot latin ignis).

Kali (Sanskrit, f., काली, , wörtl.: „Die Schwarze“) ist im Hinduismus die Göttin mit dem Aspekt des Todes und der Zerstörung, aber auch der Erneuerung. Dies beruht auf dem Glauben, dass ohne Zerstörung nichts Neues entstehen kann und dass Leben und Tod eine untrennbare Einheit bilden. In der Mythologie stellt sie eine Verkörperung des Zornes der Durga dar, aus deren Stirn sie entsprungen sein und dann das Weltall mit ihrem schrecklichen Brüllen erfüllt haben soll. In anderen Mythen ist sie die dunkle Seite Parvatis und eine der Mahavidyas.

Presso la religione induista, Kali (sanscrito Kālī, in Devanagari  काली) rappresenta l'aspetto guerriero di Parvati, la consorte di Śiva, una divinità dalla storia lunga e complessa. Nonostante sia grossolanamente identificata come simbolo di oscurità e violenza, si tratta di una deità benefica e terrifica al tempo stesso, dalla carnagione scura e numerosi attributi dal profondo significato simbolico. Le quattro braccia reggono strumenti di distruzione e purificazione; al collo indossa una collana fatta con i teschi di Asura (demoni).
