KWIC

KWIC is an acronym for Key Word In Context, the most common format for concordance lines.A KWIC index is formed by sorting and aligning the words within an article title to allow each word (except the stop words) in titles to be searchable alphabetically in the index. It was a useful indexing method for technical manuals before computerized full text search became common.For example, the title statement of this article and the Wikipedia slogan would appear as follows in a KWIC index. A KWIC index usually uses a wide layout to allow the display of maximum 'in context' information (not shown in the following example).

Ein Permutiertes (alphabetisches) Register, Permutiertes Verzeichnis oder Kettenregister ist eine besondere Form eines Registers, bei dem ganze Phrasen (Titel wie Buchtitel und  Überschriften oder Schlagwortketten) mehrfach so permutiert aufgelistet werden, dass jeweils ein anderes Stichwort als hervorgehober Registereintrag erscheint. Die Register werden in der Regel vollautomatisch erstellt, wobei als üblichen Darstellungsformen KWIC (keyword in context) und KWOC (keyword out of index) unterschieden werden.

KWIC è l'acronimo della locuzione KeyWord In Context. Un Indice KWIC è un elenco ridondante di locuzioni che si utilizzano per costituire un indice di un corpo di conoscenze, cioè un elenco che agevoli l'accesso ai contenuti del suddetto corpo. Questi indici sono stati usati abbastanza ampiamente per redigere cataloghi di biblioteche; taluni indici analitici di libri si avvicinano agli indici KWIC. Il termine indice KWIC è stato introdotto quando si sono prodotti tali indici con il computer e in quest'ambito il nostro termine si contrappone a indice KWOC, dove KWOC sta per KeyWord Out of Context.

KWIC is de afkorting van Key Word In Context, een techniek die in 1958 door Hans Peter Luhn bij IBM ontwikkeld werd voor het automatisch genereren van indexen, in het bijzonder voor technisch-wetenschappelijke werken. Hierbij worden niet de titels alfabetisch gerangschikt, maar wel de "betekeniswoorden" (keywords) die erin voorkomen; en deze worden in hun context getoond, d.w.z. met een aantal omringende woorden. "Stopwoorden", zoals lidwoorden, voegwoorden of voorzetsels worden normaal niet beschouwd als "keyword", en niet meegenomen bij het opstellen van de index.
