Judo

, meaning "gentle way", is a modern Japanese martial art (gendai budō) and combat sport, that originated in Japan in the late nineteenth century. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the object is to either throw one's opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue one's opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force an opponent to submit by joint locking the elbow or by applying a choke. Strikes and thrusts (by hands and feet) - as well as weapons defences - are a part of judo, but only in pre-arranged forms (Kata) and are not allowed in judo competition or free practice (randori).

Judo (jap. 柔道 jūdō [] = (wörtlich) sanfter Weg) ist eine japanische Kampfsportart, deren Prinzip „Siegen durch Nachgeben” beziehungsweise „maximale Wirkung bei einem Minimum an Aufwand” ist. Der Begründer des Judo ist Professor Dr. Jigoro Kano. Die darauf basierenden Judo/Jiu-Jitsu-Vorläuferformen wurden Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts für den Wettkampf angepasst, das heißt viele, ursprünglich noch zahlreich enthaltene, Waffen-, Tritt- und Schlagtechniken wurden entfernt, um aus einer Kunst bis dahin vorwiegend zur Selbstverteidigung, eine ganzheitliche Lehre für Körper und Geist zu machen. Die verbliebenen Techniken sind hauptsächlich Würfe, Halte- und Würgetechniken sowie Armhebel.

È anche una disciplina per la formazione dell'individuo nel senso morale e caratteriale. È diventato ufficialmente disciplina olimpica nel 1964, a Tokyo, e ha rappresentato alle Olimpiadi di Atene 2004 il terzo sport più universale, con atleti da 98 paesi.
