Juan José Ibarretxe

Juan José Ibarretxe Markuartu (born March 15, 1957) is a Basque politician. A leading member of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), he is the President (lehendakari) of Spain's Basque Country autonomous community since January 2, 1999.He was born in Llodio in the province of Álava, and holds a degree in Economics from the University of the Basque Country. In 1983 he was elected a member of the Basque Parliament for Llodio, representing the PNV, and from then on rose steadily to prominence. From 1986-1990 and 1991-1994 he was the President of the PNV Economic and Budgetary Commission. On January 4, 1995 then Basque President José Antonio Ardanza appointed him Vice President. He was nominated PNV presidential candidate on March 28, 1998 to compete in the October 25 Basque election and became President on January 2, 1999. In October 2003 he released the highly controversial Plan Ibarretxe, which foresees a future Basque country 'freely associated' with Spain, with its own separate legal system and European Union (EU) representation. Javier Solana, the Spanish EU foreign policy chief said in February 2005 that the plan had no place within the proposed EU constitution.

Juan José Ibarretxe Markuartu est un politicien basque, né le 15 mars 1957 à Laudio (Álava). Il est membre du Parti nationaliste basque (PNV) et dirige la Communauté autonome basque au Pays basque depuis le 2 janvier 1999. Il est marié à Begoña Arregui, avec qui il a deux enfants. Il est un grand amateur de vélo et a même présidé un club cycliste à Llodio. Ibarretxe a grandi en parlant seulement la langue espagnole mais parle maintenant couramment la langue basque.

Januar 1999 der Ministerpräsident (baskisch lehendakari) der Autonomen Region des Baskenlandes. Ibarretxe hat einen Abschluss in Wirtschaftswissenschaften an der Universität des Baskenlandes. Juan José Ibarretxe Markuartu (15 mei 1957) is de president (lehendakari) van Baskenland sinds 2 januari 1999.Hij werd geboren in Llodio in de provincie Álava. Hij behaalde het diploma van economist aan de universiteit van Baskenland. Hij trad toe tot de Nationalistische Partij van Baskenland, de Partido Nacionalista Vasco. Hij werd in 1983 verkozen als burgemeester van Llodio en als Baskisch parlementslid. Van 1986 tot 1990 en van 1991 tot 1994 was hij o.a. minister van financiën van de Baskische autonome regio. In 1998 won hij de verkiezingen als presidentskandidaat en werd president op 2 januari 1999.
