Rouran , Ruanruan/Ruru also known as Tan Tan was the name of a confederation of nomadic tribes on the northern borders of China Proper from the late 4th century until the late 6th century. It has sometimes been hypothesized that the Rouran are identical to the Eurasian Avars who later appeared in Europe. The term Rouran is a Mandarin Chinese transcription of the pronunciation of the name the confederacy used to refer to itself. Ruanruan and Ruru remained in modern usage despite once being derogatory. They derived from orders given by the Emperor Taiwu of Northern Wei, who waged war against the Rouran and intended to intimidate the confederacy.

Les Ruanruan (en sinogramme 蠕蠕 , hanyu pinyin Ruǎnruǎn, EFEO Jouan-jouan, littéralement « insectes grouillants » ) étaient une confédération de tribus nomades des frontières septentrionales de la Chine de la fin du jusqu’à la fin du . Parce qu’une de leurs tribus, les Hua (qu’ils mirent à la tête des Ouïghours en 460), apparut ultérieurement en Europe sous le nom d’Avars, la simplification grossière selon laquelle les mots Ruanruan et Avars étaient synonyme s’est largement répandue. Le terme Rouran (柔然) est une transcription en chinois de la prononciation du nom que la confédération se donnait à elle-même. Certains savants pensent que la prononciation coréenne Yuyon est une forme plus archaïque et donc plus proche de la prononciation d’origine. Les termes Ruanruan et Ruru sont restés dans l’usage moderne bien qu’ils aient été autrefois péjoratifs. Ils dérivaient d’ordres donnés par l’empereur Taiwu (Tuoba Tao), de la dynastie Wei du Nord, qui n’était pas d'ethnie han, qui fit la guerre aux Ruanruan et tenta d’intimider la confédération.

Die Rouran (Shou-shan oder auch: Shuan-Shuan = chin. "wimmelndes Gewürm") waren eine mongolisch geprägte Horde in der heutigen Mongolei. Sie wurde unter Yujiulü Mokolü ("Kahlkopf", 277 - 307) im 3. Jahrhundert gebildet und dehnte sich unter She-lüan (Kütelbüri, 394 - 410) ca. 402 über die gesamten Länder nördlich der Gobi aus. Wie die späteren Mongolen gehörten auch sie zur proto-mongolischen Xianbei Nomadenkonföderation.

Żou-żan - lud koczowniczy zamieszkujący pierwotnie w Azji, na północnych granicach Cesarstwa Chińskiego, między Tien-szanem a Wielkim Chinganem. największe znaczenie Żou-żanie osiągnęli w okresie między połową IV a połową VI wieku, kiedy trudnili się głównie najazdami na Cesarstwo Chińskie. Kres ich hegemonii na stepach azjatyckich położyli Turkuci, początkowo zamieszkujący góry Ałtaju i specjalizujący się w wytwarzaniu żelaznej broni z miejscowych surowców. Pokonali Żou-żanów, których resztka w trwodze uciekła na zachód i w roku 558 pojawiła się w Europie na północnym przedpolu Kaukazu, gdzie znani byli Bizantyńczykom pod nazwą Awarów.

Rouran (Juan Juan) (EFEO), Ruǎnruǎn (蠕蠕 literalmente "insectos bulliciosos"), Rú Rú (茹茹 literalmente "forraje”) o Róurán (柔然), era el nombre de una confederación de tribus nómadas de las fronteras septentrionales de China desde finales del siglo IV hasta finales del siglo VI. Parece ser que una de las tribus, los Hua (que iba a la cabeza de los Uigur en 460) apareció posteriormente en Europa con el nombre de Ávaros de Eurasia, la simplificación grosera, según la cual, los nombres de juan juan y ávaros eran un sinónimo, ha sido discutida por mucho tiempo. El término de rouran (柔然) es una transcripción china de la pronunciación coreana yuyon una forma más arcaica, pero más cercana a la pronunciación de origen. Los términos ruan ruan y ru ru son el resultado de la utilización moderna del término, aunque anteriormente fueran considerados peyorativos.
