Joshua Aaron Fishman (b. 1926) is internationally renowned for his groundbreaking work in the sociology of language, language planning, bilingual education, and language and ethnicity. His interdisciplinary scholarship, example, and advocacy have had and continue to have huge impact on educational access and equality for language minorities, both locally in Yiddish communities of Philadelphia and New York, and globally in indigenous and immigrant communities throughout the world.
