Joshua, Josue (Hebrew) In the Old Testament, son of Nun (nun, "fish") and successor of Moses, who led the Israelites in the invasion and settlement of Caanan; in the Middle Ages, rated among the "Nine Worthies." Moses died or disappeared "from the top of Mount Pisgah (Nebo, oracular Wisdom), after he had laid his hands upon Joshua, who thus became 'full of the spirit of wisdom,' i.e., initiated" (BCW 14:264-5).
