Joseph McCarthy

Joseph Raymond McCarthy (November 14, 1908 – May 2, 1957) was a Republican U.S. Senator from the state of Wisconsin between 1947 and 1957. Beginning in 1950, McCarthy became the most visible public face of a period of extreme anti-communist suspicion inspired by the tensions of the Cold War. He was noted for making unsubstantiated claims that there were large numbers of Communists and Soviet spies and sympathizers inside the federal government. Ultimately, his tactics led to his being discredited and censured by the United States Senate. The term "McCarthyism," coined in 1950 in reference to McCarthy's practices, was soon applied to similar anti-communist pursuits. Today the term is used more generally to describe demagogic, reckless, and unsubstantiated accusations, as well as public attacks on the character or patriotism of political opponents.

Joseph Raymond McCarthy (* 14. November 1908 in Grand Chute, Wisconsin; † 2. Mai 1957 in Bethesda, Maryland) war ein US-amerikanischer Politiker. Er gehörte der Republikanischen Partei an und wurde bekannt für seine Kampagne gegen eine vermutete Unterwanderung des Regierungsapparates der Vereinigten Staaten durch Kommunisten. Er gab der so genannten McCarthy-Ära der frühen 1950er Jahre seinen Namen, in der antikommunistische Verschwörungstheorien und Denunziationen das politische Klima in den USA bestimmten.

Joseph Raymond "Joe" McCarthy (ur. 14 listopada 1908 pod Appleton w Wisconsin, zm. 2 maja 1957) – polityk amerykański, przez dwie kadencje (w latach 1947-1957) był senatorem z ramienia Partii Republikańskiej ze stanu Wisconsin.Pochodził z ubogiej rodziny farmerów; był synem Irlandki Bridget Tierney pochodzącej z hrabstwa Tipperary i Amerykanina Tima McCarthy'ego, syna Irlandczyka i Niemki.Mając 14 lat po ukończeniu 8 klas porzucił naukę i założył kurzą fermę. W wieku 20 lat, po bankructwie fermy, zaczął pracę jako ekspedient w sklepie spożywczym. Wkrótce został kierownikiem. Rok później został przeniesiony do Manawy i tam powrócił do nauki i skończył najpierw szkołę średnią a następnie (w 1935) Marquette University w Milwaukee. Zaraz po ukończeniu studiów prawniczych otworzył własną praktykę w Wupaca. Wkrótce został przyjęty do kancelarii prawniczej w Shawano gdzie doszedł do stanowiska partnera.

Durante questi dieci anni, McCarthy divenne famoso per le sue accuse "a ruota libera" di appartenenza al Partito Comunista o di generiche simpatie comuniste. Queste accuse furono quasi sempre rivolte a dipendenti del Governo federale, in particolare a funzionari del Dipartimento di Stato, ma coinvolsero anche molte altre persone.
