John Richard Hicks

Sir John Richard Hicks (April 8, 1904 –  May 20, 1989) was one of the most important and influential economists of the twentieth century. His most familiar contributions in the field of economics were the IS/LM model, which summarised the Keynesian view of macroeconomics, and his statement of consumer demand theory in microeconomics. In 1972, Hicks was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics  with Kenneth Arrow for "pioneering contributions to general economic equilibrium theory and welfare theory."[1]

John Richard Hicks (ur. 8 kwietnia 1904 w Leamington Spa w Anglii, zm. 20 maja 1989 w Blockley) – ekonomista brytyjski.Profesor uniwersytetów w Londynie, Cambridge, Manchesterze, od 1952 w Oksfordzie. Zajmował się problemami ogólnej równowagi ekonomicznej i wzrostu gospodarczego. Jeden z najwybitniejszych w teorii ekonomii przedstawicieli nurtu matematycznego w ekonomii, czerpiący z dorobku austriackiej szkoły ekonomicznej – współpracował stale z innym przedstawicielem tego nurtu, R.G.D. Allenem. Współautor tzw. współczynnika Kaldora-Hicksa do porównań poziomu dobrobytu oraz modelu Hicksa-Hansena – opartego na teorii keynesowskiej opisu gospodarki jako równowagi pieniądza, konsumpcji i inwestycji.

Nato Leamington Spa nel Warwickshire (Inghilterra), Hicks studiò a Oxford ai college Clifton e Balliol. In seguito insegnò alla London School of Economics, dove incontrò Friedrich von Hayek. Trascorse gli anni dal 1935 al 1938 all'università di Cambridge, occupato principalmente nella scrittura del suo volume su Valore e capitale. Tra il 1938 e il 1946 è professore alla Victoria University di Manchester. Nel 1946 ritorna a Oxford, prima come research fellow al college Nuffield (1946-1965), quindi come Drummond Professor of Political Economics (1952-1965) e infine come research fellow al college All Souls (1965-1971).
