John Glenn

John Herschel Glenn Jr. (born July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio) is an American astronaut, Marine Corps fighter pilot, ordained Presbyterian elder, corporate executive, and politician. He was the third American to fly in space and the first American to orbit the Earth, aboard Friendship 7 in 1962. After retiring from NASA, he served as a United States Senator (D-Ohio) from 1974 to 1999. He received the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978. He became the oldest person to fly in space when, at the age of 77 in 1998, he flew aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-95).

John Herschel Glenn, Jr. (* 18. Juli 1921 in Cambridge, Ohio, USA) ist ein ehemaliger US-amerikanischer Testpilot, Astronaut und US-Senator. Er war der erste Amerikaner, der 1962 die Erde in einem Raumschiff umkreiste.Glenn diente im Zweiten Weltkrieg und im Korea-Krieg als Kampfflieger und wurde später Testpilot für die US Navy. Im Juli 1957 stellte er einen neuen Geschwindigkeitsrekord auf, als er in drei Stunden und 23 Minuten von Los Angeles nach New York flog, der erste Transkontinentalflug in Überschallgeschwindigkeit. John Herschel Glenn, Jr. (ur. 18 lipca 1921 w Cambridge, stan Ohio, USA) — astronauta i polityk amerykański. Szkołę średnią ukończył w New Concord w stanie Ohio. W 1942 roku rozpoczął szkolenie według programu dla pilotów lotnictwa morskiego. Rok później przyjęto go do wojska. Podczas II wojny światowej brał udział w 59 lotach bojowych. Po wojnie kontynuował służbę w lotnictwie na wyspie Guam. W 1953 roku uczestniczył w wojnie w Korei. Później ukończył szkołę pilotów oblatywaczy i w tym charakterze służył w latach 1956 - 1959. W międzyczasie ukończył Uniwersytet w Maryland (University of Maryland).

Qui partecipa alla battaglia delle isole Marshall. Partecipa anche alla guerra di Corea e al termine diventa Pilota Collaudatore, con diversi record di velocità (Progetto Bullett).
