John Boyd Dunlop (

1840 –

1921), born in
Scotland, was inventor who founded the rubber company that bears his name,
Dunlop Tyres.He was born on a farm at
Dreghorn,
North Ayrshire, and studied to be a
veterinary surgeon at the
Dick Vet,
University of Edinburgh, a profession he pursued for nearly ten years at home, moving to
Belfast in what is now
Northern Ireland, in 1867.In
1887, he developed the first practical
pneumatic or inflatable tyre for his son's tricycle, tested it, and
patented it on
December 7 1888. However, two years after he was granted the patent Dunlop was officially informed that it was invalid as Scottish inventor
Robert William Thomson, had patented the idea in France in 1846 and in the US in 1847. Dunlop’s development of the pneumatic tyre arrived at a crucial time in the development of
road transport. He also had his own veterinarian practice in Ireland. Commercial production began in late 1890 in Belfast. Dunlop assigned his patent to William Harvey Du Cros, in return for 1,500
shares in the resultant company, and in the end did not make any great fortune by his invention. Dunlop died in
Dublin, and is buried in
Deans Grange Cemetery.

Dublin) gilt als Erfinder des luftgefüllten Reifens.Über die Erfindung des Luftreifens wird allgemein die Anekdote erzählt, dass 1888 Dunlop sich über den Krach der Metallreifen des
Dreirades seines Sohnes ärgerte. Er wickelte dem Gefährt aus dünnen
Gummiplatten zusammengeklebte Schläuche um die Räder und pumpte die Hüllen mit einer Fußballpumpe auf. Am
7. Dezember 1888 meldete er das
Patent für den ersten Fahrradluftreifen an und gründete ein Jahr später das erste Reifenwerk der späteren
Dunlop-Gruppe. Das Patent verkaufte er einige Zeit später an William Harvey Du Cros. Er selbst wurde Zeit seines Lebens nicht reich durch seine Erfindung.

John Boyd Dunlop (

scozzese, fondatore della omonima società produttrice di pneumatici Dunlop.Nato in una fattoria a Dreghorn, nel nord
Ayrshire, studiò chirurgia veterinaria al Dick Vet, all'Università di
Edimburgo, intraprendendo in seguito la professione per quasi dieci anni. Nel 1867 si trasferì a
Belfast in
Irlanda.Nel 1887 sviluppò il primo prototipo di
ruota pneumatica per il triciclo del figlio, e dopo una fase di studio ne depositò il brevetto il
7 dicembre 1888. Tuttavia, due anni dopo la concessione del
brevetto, Dunlop fu informato ufficialmente che gli era stato revocato in seguito a verifiche più approfondite. Era infatti emerso che già quarant'anni prima l'inventore scozzese Robert William Thomson, aveva già brevettato un'idea analoga in
Francia nel 1846 e negli
Stati Uniti nel 1847. A Dunlop spetta comunque il merito della creazione della moderna gomma pneumatica gonfiabile come la conosciamo oggi. Gli sviluppi che Dunlop mise appunto sulle ruote pneumatiche arrivarono in un momento cruciale per l'evoluzione del trasporto stradale. La prima fabbrica fu operativa a
Dublino nel 1889, seguita l'anno seguente da una seconda a Belfast dove iniziò anche la commercializzazione del prodotto. In seguito Dunlop cedette il suo brevetto a William Harvey Du Cros, in cambio di 1500 azioni della compagnia appena fondata. Nel complesso egli non riuscì a fare grande fortuna dalla propria invenzione. Morì a Dublino nel 1921.
