Johann Wolfgang Goethe

, , (28 August 1749 –  22 March 1832) was a German writer. George Eliot called him "Germany's greatest man of letters... and the last true polymath to walk the earth." Goethe's works span the fields of poetry, drama, literature, theology, humanism, science and painting. Goethe's magnum opus, lauded as one of the peaks of world literature, is the two-part dramatic poem Faust. Goethe's other well-known literary works include his numerous poems, the Bildungsroman Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship and the epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther.

März 1832 in Weimar; auch Göthe), ist als Dichter, Dramatiker, Theaterleiter, Naturwissenschaftler, Kunsttheoretiker und Staatsmann einer der bekanntesten Vertreter der Weimarer Klassik. Sein Werk umfasst Gedichte, Dramen und Prosa-Literatur, aber auch naturwissenschaftliche Abhandlungen. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Dichter und ist eine herausragende Persönlichkeit der Weltliteratur.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (ur. 28 sierpnia 1749 we Frankfurcie nad Menem, zm. 22 marca 1832 w Weimarze), najwybitniejszy niemiecki poeta okresu romantyzmu i jeden z najbardziej znaczących w skali światowej, dramaturg, prozaik, uczony, polityk, wolnomularz. Związany z romantyzmem, nie zerwał nigdy więzów łączących go z klasycyzmem. Był również myślicielem i uczonym, znawcą wielu dziedzin wiedzy oraz sztuki. Studia prawnicze skończył w Lipsku i Strasburgu. W 1775 roku osiadł w Weimarze, gdzie pozostał do końca życia. Pełnił różne funkcje na dworze księcia sasko-weimarskiego, dochodząc do rangi prezydenta Izby Finansów. W roku 1782 został nobilitowany. Od roku 1791 do 1817 kierował teatrem oraz wszystkimi instytucjami oświatowo-kulturalnymi księstwa. W 1786 roku wyjechał na dwa lata do Włoch, co wywarło duży wpływ na jego twórczość. W czasie podróży zatrzymał się na parę dni w Szwajcarii, gdzie pozostawił pewien skrypt, jak się okazało dopiero ok. sto lat później, był to skrypt dramatu pt. Urfaust, niejako wprowadzenia do później napisanego dramatu Faust. Najbliższa przyjaźń łączyła go z wielkim poetą romantycznym Fryderykiem Schillerem. Zmarł w Weimarze, w całkowitym osamotnieniu, po śmierci żony i jedynego syna.
