Der Januar (v. lat. ianua „Tür, Zugang“) ist der erste Monat des Jahres im Gregorianischen Kalender. Der Name Jänner/Jenner ist bis heute im süddeutschen Sprachraum üblich, in Österreich und Südtirol heißt dieser Monat offiziell Jänner. Auch auf Schweizerdeutsch nennt man den Januar gelegentlich Jänner.

Jaén ist die Hauptstadt der Provinz Jaén im Nordosten der Autonomen Region Andalusien (Spanien). Der Name leitet sich her vom Arabischen Geen (=Karawanenweg).Die Stadt hat 117.540 Einwohner (Stand 2006) und liegt im weiten Tal des Río Guadalquivir zwischen den mit Olivenbäumen bewachsenen Bergen La Pandera und Jabalcuz in 574 m Höhe über NN.In Zeiten der römischen Herrschaft über die Iberische Halbinsel wurde in der Gegend um Jaén nach Silber geschürft. Später machten die Araber sie zur Hauptstadt eines kleinen Fürstentums, das im Jahr 1246 im Zuge der Reconquista (Rückeroberung) in die Hände der Christen fiel. Jaén wurde so zu einem strategisch wichtigen Punkt in der Reconquista (Rückeroberung) der Katholischen Könige und erhielt 1466 den Titel "Sehr noble, berühmte und treue Stadt Jaén. Wächter und Verteidiger der Könige von Kastilien." 1491 wurde die Eroberung Granadas von Jaén aus begonnen.

Jan ( od hebr. rdzenia יחב – łaska) – imię męskie pochodzenia biblijnego. Po hebrajsku oznacza "Bóg (Jahwe) jest łaskaw". Imię to nosił jeden z apostołów. Zostało przejęte najpierw do greki, a potem do łaciny. Rozpowszechniło się we wszystkich krajach chrześcijańskich.W polskich dokumentach zapisywano najpierw to imię w postaci Ioannes, Iohannes (1012-18), później także Jan (1161), Jon (1302), Johan (1320), Jen (1366), Johans (1385) oraz Joan (forma kresowa, 1432). Największą popularność zyskała forma Jan, od czasów średniowiecza będąca jednym z najczęściej nadawanych imion. W 2004 r. imię Jan nosiło 689 212 osób w Polsce (1. miejsce wśród imion męskich pod względem popularności; jedynie dwa imiona żeńskie: Anna i Maria były liczniej nadawane).

Jego nazwa, podobnie jak i pozostałych jedenastu miesięcy, pochodzi od charakterystycznych cech, związanych z towarzyszącymi temu miesiącowi zjawiskami przyrodniczymi lub z rytmem wykonywanych w tym czasie prac na roli. Nazwa miesiąca (wg Brücknera) pochodzi od słowa 'tyki', które w tym czasie sporządzali gospodarze. W języku staropolskim styczeń nazywano również tyczniem, godnikiem i ledzieniem (por. współczesna czeska nazwa miesiąca: leden).

Il calendario romano originale era più breve di quello gregoriano (304 giorni), in quanto i Romani consideravano l'inverno un periodo senza mesi. Fu Numa Pompilio ad aggiungere gennaio e febbraio, rendendo l'anno uguale a quello solare. Sebbene Marzo rimase il primo mese dell'anno, Gennaio lo divenne di fatto in quanto era il periodo in cui venivano scelti i consoli.
