James Abram Garfield

James Abram Garfield (November 19, 1831–September 19, 1881) was a major general in the United States Army, member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and the twentieth President of the United States. He was the second U.S. President to be assassinated —  Abraham Lincoln was the first. Garfield had the second shortest presidency in U.S. history, after William Henry Harrison's. In office for six months and fifteen days, President Garfield, a Republican, actually served for less than four months before being fatally shot on July 2, 1881.

Osierocony w wieku dwóch lat, wcześnie musiał zacząć zarabiać na swoje utrzymanie. Po ukończeniu edukacji pracował jako nauczyciel języków klasycznych.W 1859 został z ramienia republikanów członkiem senatu stanu Ohio. W czasie wojny secesyjnej dowodził brygadą. Dosłużył do stopnia generała-majora (generała dywizji).

Nacque nel 1831 nei pressi di Cleveland nella Contea di Cuyahoga nell'Ohio, in un'abitazione di pionieri. Studiò all'Hiram College e al William College, pagandosi gli studi con il lavoro di contadino e carpentiere. All'età di 25 anni iniziò ad insegnare latino e greco nella sua vecchia scuola e in breve ne divenne preside. Si sposò ed ebbe sette figli, e probabilmente avrebbe continuato ad insegnare se non fosse scoppiata la Guerra di secessione.
