Jam session
A jam session is a
musical act where
musicians gather and play (or "jam") without extensive preparation or predefined
arrangements. The origin of the term jam in this context can be traced back to the 1920s. According to the
Online Dictionary of Etymology, the term originally appeared ca. 1929, referring to a "short, free improvised passage performed by the whole band". The derivation of this usage is obscure, but like other novel terms that came into English through
jazz music — such as the terms "
hip", "
hep" and "
hepcat" — it is possible that it ultimately derives from the West African
Wolof language.

Une jam session (littéralement « session confiture » en
anglais) est une séance musicale
improvisée, basée sur des
standards lorsqu'il s'agit de jazz et à laquelle peuvent se joindre différents musiciens. On dit alors que l'on fait une jam. On utilise parfois le terme « bœuf » en français : « faire le bœuf », « taper le bœuf » ou encore « bœuffer ».

Eine Jamsession (v.
engl. jam „improvisieren“ und session „Veranstaltung“) ist ein zwangloses Zusammenspiel von
Jazz-,
Blues-,
Hip-Hop- oder
Rock-Musikern, die nicht üblicherweise in einer
Band zusammenspielen. Auf Jazz-Jamsessions können Stücke gespielt, deren
harmonisches Schema und
Melodie allen Mitmusikern bekannt ist (sogenannte
Standards) oder es kann auch frei improvisiert werden. Oft wird die
Rhythmusgruppe (p, b, dr.) für die Session im Vorhinein zusammengestellt, damit die hinzukommenden Musiker wissen, was für eine Musik sie erwartet.

Jam session - rodzaj zbiorowego muzykowania (też: sesja
improwizacyjna), szczególnie popularny w
jazzie,
bluesie i
funku. Podczas jam session nie gra się konkretnych utworów. Czasem improwizuje się na temat popularnych standardów jazzowych, stanowiących swoim tematem punkt wyjścia improwizacji lub po prostu gra w tonacji zadanej przez któregoś z grających muzyków. Wszyscy obecni na sesji muzycy improwizują. Bardzo często całe koncerty, czy występy w klubach odbywają się w luźnej formie jam session.

improvvisando su griglie di accordi e temi conosciuti (
standards).Il termine, di etimologia afro-americana ma ancora piuttosto oscura, è nato negli
anni venti negli ambienti
jazz, e si è poi diffuso anche nel rock.Una jam session in genere non ha lo scopo di intrattenere il pubblico, ma è un ritrovo di musicisti che hanno così l'opportunità di provare nuovo materiale musicale e mettere alla prova la loro abilità di improvvisatori in confronto con altri strumentisti; a volte è semplicemente un ritrovo sociale.
