Jacob Le Maire (c. 1585, Antwerp or Amsterdam - December 22, 1616, at sea) was a Dutch mariner who circumnavigated the earth in 1615-16. The strait between Tierra del Fuego and Isla de los Estados was named the Le Maire Strait in his honor, though not without controversy. It was Le Maire himself who proposed to the council aboard Eendracht that the new passage should be called by his name and the council unanimously agreed with Le Maire. The author or authors of THE RELATION took Eendracht captain Schouten’s side by proclaiming:

“ ... our men had each of them three cups of wine in signe of ioy for our good hap ... [and the naming of] the Straights of Le Maire, although by good right it should rather have been called Willem Schouten Straight, after our Masters Name, by whose wise conduction and skill in sayling, the same was found.”.

Jacob Le Maire, (* 1585 in Antwerpen; † Dezember 1616 auf See) war ein niederländischer Seefahrer und umrundete mit Willem Cornelisz Schouten Kap Hoorn am 29. Januar 1616 und entdeckte im Mai 1616 die Tonga-Inseln.

Jacob Le Maire (né en 1585 à Anvers, décédé en mer le ) est un marin hollandais à qui l'on doit la découverte du détroit portant son nom, entre la Terre de Feu et l'île des États, en Argentine. Il est le premier marin à franchir le cap Horn, prouvant ainsi que la Terre de Feu n'était pas un continent.

Jacob Le Maire, född omkring år 1585 i Antwerpen, Nederländerna, död 22 december 1616 till havs på väg till Amsterdam. Le Maire var en nederländsk sjöfarare och upptäcktsresande som bl.a upptäckte Kap Horn och Tongaöarna.

Podczas wyprawy w latach 1615-1616 wraz z Willemem Schoutenem odkrył cieśninę pomiędzy Ziemią Ognistą a Wyspą Stanów, noszącą obecnie na jego cześć nazwę cieśniny Le Maire'a. Jako pierwszy opłynął przylądek Horn (również z Schoutenem), dowodząc tym samym, że Ziemia Ognista nie jest kontynentem (poszukiwaną Terra Australis).
