Jötunn

A Jotun, in Norse mythology, is a giant, one of a mythological race with superhuman strength, described as standing in opposition to the gods, although they frequently mingled with or were even married to these, both Æsir and Vanir. Their stronghold is known as Utgard, and is situated in Jötunheimr, one of the nine worlds of Norse cosmology, separated from Midgard, the world of men, by high mountains and dense forests. When living in worlds other than their own, they seem to prefer caves and dark places.

Jötunn (an. iötunn, ahd.  enz, aeng. eoton, dä. jætte, sv. jätte) ist eine Bezeichnung für Riesen in der altnordischen Mythologie. Der Name leitet von dem verb essen (ahd. ezzan) ab, womit sich die Bezeichnung als die Gefräßigen übersetzen ließe. Die Bezeichnung wird sowohl für weibliche als auch für männliche Riesen verwendet.

I Jötunn nella Mitologia norrena, sono i giganti, una razza mitologica dotata di forza sovrumana, descritti come in opposizione agli dei, sebbene frequentemente si associassero o addirittura si sposassero con essi, sia Æsir che Vanir. La loro fortezza era conosciuta come Útgarðr, ed era situata in Jötunheimr, uno dei nove mondi della cosmologia norrena, separato da Miðgarðr, il mondo degli uomini, da alte montagne e dense foreste. Quando vivevano in mondi diversi dal proprio parevano preferire caverne e luoghi oscuri.

Jötun (Noors: Jötnar, Jöten) is in de Noordse mythologie de soortnaam voor een van de twee zowel mannelijke als vrouwelijke reuzengeslachten. Het gaat om mensachtige of beestachtige entiteiten van vaak onvoorstelbare afmetingen (groter dan die van de goden), en begaafd met quasi goddelijke kracht en macht.
