Italian history

United in 1861, Italy has significantly contributed to the cultural and social development of the entire Mediterranean area, deeply influencing European culture as well. Important cultures and civilizations have existed there since prehistoric times. After Magna Graecia, the Etruscan civilization and especially the Roman Republic and Empire that dominated this part of the world for many centuries came an Italy whose people would make immeasurable contributions to the development of European philosophy, science, and art during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Dominated by city-states for much of the medieval and Renaissance period, the Italian peninsula was eventually unified amidst much struggle in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Das heutige Italien war in der Antike bis ins 5. Jahrhundert nach Christus Teil des Römischen Reiches mit Rom als Hauptstadt. Der Name Italia bezog sich dabei anfangs nur auf Bruttium als jene Region, die direkt an das griechisch besiedelte Süditalien grenzte (Strabon 5,1,1); erst im 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. weitete man den Begriff auf die ganze Apenninhalbinsel aus. Obwohl der genaue rechtliche Status Italiens in später Republik, Kaiserzeit und Spätantike schwer zu bestimmen ist, bildete es doch seit 90 v. Chr. administrativ im wesentlichen eine Einheit und war keine Provinz.

Włochy jako zjednoczone państwo istnieją dopiero od 1861. Od średniowiecza do Risorgimento, pomimo że Półwysep Apeniński był względnie spójny pod względem językowym i kulturowym, jego historia składała się z dziejów niezależnych republik i księstw oraz obcych posiadłości i stref wpływów.

Per storia d'Italia si intende per convenzione la storia della regione geografica italiana e dei popoli che l'hanno abitata, dotata - al di là delle molteplici differenze culturali e delle successive trasformazioni politiche - di una specifica identità che l'ha condotta nei secoli a essere riconosciuta come un unico soggetto storico. In un'accezione più ristretta, per storia d'Italia si intende unicamente la storia dello stato unitario, ossia la storia della Repubblica Italiana e del Regno d'Italia, nonché degli eventi che condussero alla sua formazione, ossia la storia dell'espansione del Regno di Sardegna, tradizionalmente conosciuta come Risorgimento.
