Istanbul Province

Istanbul Province is a province located in north-west Turkey. It has an area of 5,196 km² and a population of 11,622,257 (2006 est). The population was 10,018,735 in 2000. It is surrounded by the provinces of Tekirdağ to the west, Kocaeli to the east, the Black Sea to the north and the Sea of Marmara to the south. The Bosphorus (Boğaziçi) Strait divides the province in two parts: the European side and the Asian side. The capital of the province is the city of Istanbul which covers much of the province.

Istanbul (türkisch Istanbul) ist eine türkische Provinz im Nordwesten des Landes, mit der Hauptstadt Istanbul. Ihre Fläche beträgt 5.110 km². Die offizielle Bevölkerungszahl betrug laut Volkszählung des Jahres 2000 10.018.735, wovon die Stadt Istanbul allein 8.803.468 Einwohner hatte. 2005 lebten in der Metropolregion Istanbul, deren Gebiet mit dem der Provinz Istanbul identisch ist, etwa 11,5 Millionen Menschen. Die Bevölkerungsdichte beträgt danach 2.220 Einwohner je Quadratkilometer, in den ländlichen Regionen außerhalb der Stadt sind es nur noch 487 Einwohner je Quadratkilometer. Etwa 70 Prozent der Bevölkerung Istanbuls sind in jüngerer Zeit aus Anatolien zugezogen. Jedes Jahr entstehen am Stadtrand neue Gecekondus, die mit der Zeit ausgebaut werden und sich zu neuen Stadtteilen gruppieren.

İstanbul är en provins i västra Turkiet. Den har totalt 10 018 735 invånare (2000) och en areal på 5 170 km². Provinshuvudstad är Istanbul, Turkiets största stad. Provinsen är belägen på båda sidor om Bosporen, vilket gör att den ligger både i Europa och Asien och man kan säga att denna provins binder samman dessa kontinenter. Under antiken startade Sidenvägen från provinsens asiatiska stadsdelar.
