Istanbul (Turkish: Istanbul) is the largest city in Turkey, forming the country's economic, cultural, and historical heart. With a population of , the city is at the center of the second-largest urban area in Europe after Moscow, and among the world's largest cities by population within city limits. Istanbul's vast area of is coterminous with Istanbul Province, of which the city is considered capital. Straddling the Bosphorus—one of the world's busiest waterways—in northwestern Turkey, between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea, Istanbul is a transcontinental city, with one third of its population living in Asia but its commercial and historical center in Europe.

Istanbul (turkiska: İstanbul; grekiska: Κωνσταντινούπολις, Konstantinoúpolis, äldre svenskt namn: Miklagård) är Turkiets största stad och är belägen vid Bosporen och Marmarasjön på gränsen mellan Europa och Asien. Istanbuls storstadskommun (İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi) täcker nu mera hela Istanbuls provins och är efter en administrativ omorganisation 2008 indelad i 39 distrikt. Befolkningen uppgick till 12,9 miljoner invånare i slutet av 2009 på en yta av 5 343 km². Av dessa bodde cirka 60 procent på den europeiska sidan och 40 procent på den asiatiska sidan.
