Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is an English island and county in the English Channel five miles from the South Coast of Britain. It is situated south of the county of  Hampshire and is separated from mainland Britain by the  Solent. Popular since Victorian times as a holiday resort, the Isle of Wight is known for its natural beauty and for its world-famous sailing based in Cowes.

L'île de Wight est une île qui se situe sur la côte sud de l'Angleterre (Royaume-Uni) dans la Manche, en face des villes de Southampton et Portsmouth, dont elle est séparée par un bras de mer : le Solent. Lors de la création des conseils de comtés en 1888, l'Ile de Wight fut rattachée au comté d'Hampshire, mais, dès 1890, à la suite d'une campagne ménée par les habitants, l'île fut érigée en comté indépendant.

Die Isle of Wight [] ist eine der Südküste Großbritanniens vorgelagerte Insel – gegenüber der Stadt Southampton gelegen. Sie ist rund 35 km lang und bis zu etwa 20 km breit. Auf einer Fläche von 381 km² leben rund 138.400 Menschen (2004). Früher gehörte die Insel zur  Grafschaft Hampshire, aber seit 1974 ist sie eigenständig. Hauptstadt ist Newport.

Isle of Wight – wyspa należąca do archipelagu  Wysp Brytyjskich, oddzielona od brytyjskiego wybrzeża cieśniną Solent. Kształtem przypomina romb o wymiarach 26 na 39 kilometrów i powierzchni 381 km². Główne miasta to Ryde, Cowes, Newport. W sensie administracyjnym wyspa stanowi samodzielną jednolitą jednostkę administracyjną i jednocześnie hrabstwo ceremonialne z Newport jako ośrodkiem administracyjnym. Głównym źródłem dochodów jest turystyka - wyspa słynie z niezwykłych krajobrazów. Posiada bardzo dobrą bazę dla turystyki rowerowej - liczne szlaki i wiele miejsc wartych odwiedzenia. Oprócz turystyki rowerowej silnie rozwiniętymi dziedzinami sportu są żeglarstwo oraz sporty motorowe (m.in. żużel).

L'Isola di Wight è un'isola situata a sud della costa dell'Inghilterra e al largo di Southampton, nel canale della Manica. È una contea dell'Inghilterra.La sua popolazione era di 132.731 abitanti al censimento del 2001 (e 126.600 a quello del 1991). La superficie è di 380 km². L'isola ha un solo rappresentante al Parlamento (oggi Andrew Turner) e per questa ragione è il collegio elettorale con più elettori del Regno Unito.
