Islamic scholar

Islamic studies scholars or simply Islamic scholars are both Muslim and non-Muslim scholars who work in one or more fields of Islamic studies. "Islamic studies" an umbrella term for all Islam-related studies, related to both Islamization of knowledge and an extrinsic study of Islam, and Islamic culture.

Ulema (, , singular: , , "scholar") (The people of Islamic Knowledge) refers to the educated class of Muslim legal scholars engaged in the several fields of Islamic studies. They are best known as the arbiters of shari‘a law. While the ulema are well versed in legal jurisprudence being Islamic lawyers, some of them also go on to specialize in other sciences, such as philosophy, dialectical theology or Quranic hermeneutics or explanation. The fields studied, and the importance given them, will vary from tradition to tradition, or even from seminary to seminary.

Ulem to muzułmański teolog i uczony. Słowo pochodzi z wyrazu arabskiego alim, oznaczającego uczonego. W skład grupy ulemów wchodzili wszyscy duchowni muzułmańscy : muftiowie oraz  imamowie. Ulemów określa się również mianem znawców szariatu. Ich główną siedzibą były meczety. Główną rolę posiadał meczet al-Azhar w Kairze.

עולמא (בערבית: علماء , בתעתיק מדויק: עֻלמאא', ביחיד: עאלִם - عالِم, פירוש: המחזיק בידע [علم]) הם חוג חכמי הדת האסלאמיים שהשלימו הכשרה באורך מספר שנים במדעים אסלאמיים. תפקידם החשוב ביותר הוא לפסוק בסוגיות שונות בהלכה האסלאמית. מרכז עיסוקם של העולמא הוא המשפט האסלאמי, אולם רבים מהם מתמחים במדעים אחרים דוגמת פילוסופיה אסלאמית, תאולוגיה מוסלמית ופרשנות הקוראן. המופתי, הקאדי, הפקיה ומומחי החדית' הם חלק מהעולמא; יש הכוללים בעולמא גם אנשים עם הכשרה דתית פחותה דוגמת המולא או אימאם הכפר. יש לציין כי כיום משתמשים במילה גם כדי לתאר מדענים לא-דתיים. "עאלם" הוא גם אחד מ-99 שמות אללה.
