Esfahān or Isfahan (historically also rendered as Ispahan, Old Persian: Aspadana, Middle Persian: Spahān, Esfahān), located about 340 km south of Tehran at , is the capital of Esfahan Province and Iran's third largest city (after Tehran and Mashhad). Esfahan has a population of 1,600,554 (2007 calculation). Esfahan is located on the main north-south and east-west routes crossing Iran, and was once one of the largest cities in the world. It flourished from 1050 to 1722, particularly in the 16th century under the Safavid dynasty, when it became the capital of Persia for the second time in its history. Even today, the city retains much of its past glory. It is famous for its Islamic architecture, with many beautiful boulevards, covered bridges, palaces, mosques, and minarets. This led to the Persian proverb Esfahān nesf-e jahān ast: "Esfahan is half of the world".

Isfahan ( []) ist die Provinzhauptstadt der gleichnamigen Provinz im Iran mit 1.600.554 Einwohnern, inklusive des Umlands 2.071.000 Einwohner.Die Stadt liegt im Zentraliran, rund 430 Kilometer südlich von Teheran auf einer Seehöhe von 1500 Metern in einer Flussoase im fruchtbaren Tal des Zayandehrud-Flusses am Rande des Zagrosgebirges.Im Süden und Westen der Stadt erheben sich die Bakhtiyari-Berge, und im Norden und Osten erstreckt sich die iranische Hochebene, die in die großen Wüsten übergeht.

Isfahan lub Eşfahān (znany z historii także jako Ispahan, staroperski Aspadana, średnioperski Spahān, pers. اصفهان) - trzecie co do wielkości miasto  Iranu, położone ok. 340 km na południe od Teheranu. Stolica prowincji o tej samej nazwie. Populacja: ok. 2 mln.Miasto leży w oazie na Wyżynie Irańskiej, u stóp łańcucha górskiego Zagros na wysokości 1590 m n.p.m.. Isfahan położony jest na przecięciu szlaków północ-południe oraz wschód-zachód. Temperatury wahają się między 2° a 28°C.Główny plac Isfahanu - Naghsh-i Jahan (pers. ميدان نقش جهان maidaan-e naqsh-e jehaan) zwany obecnie placem Imama - jest wpisany na listę światowego dziedzictwa UNESCO.

Esfahan (o Isfahan) è una città nell'Iran centrale con 2.100.000 abitanti sul fiume Zayandeh, 400 chilometri dal Golfo Persico a un'altezza di 1590 metri sopra il livello del mare, nelle montagne dello Zagros. È la capitale della provincia di Esfahan con 1.600.000 abitanti (stima 2007) e con una superficie di 107.027 kmq. L' hinterland economico di Esfahan è la zona circostante in cui sono prodotti cotone, grano e tabacco. Le industrie tradizionali della città includono quella tessile - cotone, seta e lane, broccato e moquette - ma anche quella alimentare e metallurgica. Le industrie moderne, a parte la siderurgia, sono quelle legate alla raffinazione del petrolio.
