Ireland (; Ulster Scots: Airlann) is the third largest island in Europe behind Great Britain and Iceland. It is also the twentieth largest in the world. It lies to the northwest of Continental Europe and is surrounded by hundreds of islands and islets. To the east of Ireland, separated by the Irish Sea, is the island of Great Britain. Politically, the Republic of Ireland (also known simply as Ireland) covers five sixths of the island, with Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom, covering the remainder in the northeast. The name 'Ireland' derives from the Irish word Éire, with the addition of the Germanic word 'land'. The derivation of Éire in turn is from Eueriio and Ériu. This word, from Proto-Celtic *Īwerjū, which also gave Middle Welsh Iwerd "Irish Sea", originally meant "fatness", in the sense of fertile.

Irland ist die westliche, kleinere Insel der beiden großen nordwesteuropäischen Inseln, welche generell, jedoch nicht unumstritten, als die Britischen Inseln bekannt sind. Sie ist ca. 450 km lang und ca. 260 km breit und liegt im  Atlantik bei . Insgesamt hat sie eine Fläche von etwa 84.421 km².Man bezeichnet Irland auch als die "Grüne Insel". Der englische Name der Insel lautet Ireland, der irische Name Éire. Der lateinische Name lautet Hibernia („Winterland“). Er geht vermutlich auf das ältere Ivernia zurück, eine latinisierte Form des griechischen Namens Ierne („Irland“), der von dem antiken Geographen Pytheas stammt.

Irlandia jest trzecią pod względem wielkości wyspą w Europie. Jej powierzchnia wynosi 84 406 km², a linia brzegowa ma długość 32 589 km. Wyspa położona jest pomiędzy  Oceanem Atlantyckim a Morzem Irlandzkim. Pod względem politycznym wyspa podzielona jest na dwie części: Irlandię i Irlandię Północną która jest częścią Zjednoczonego Królestwa Wielkiej Brytanii i Irlandii Północnej.

L'Irlanda (inglese: Ireland; gaelico irlandese: Éire; scots dell' Ulster: Airlann) è un'isola dell'arcipelago britannico situata nell'Oceano Atlantico settentrionale. È delimitata a sud-est dal canale di San Giorgio, a est dal Mar d'Irlanda e a nord-est dal canale del Nord. Politicamente è divisa in Repubblica d'Irlanda (anche conosciuta semplicemente come Irlanda o, in Irlandese, Éire o Poblacht Na hÉireann, con capitale Dublino) e Irlanda del Nord (composta da sei delle nove contee dell'Ulster, con capitale Belfast).
