Iridaceae

Iridaceae is a family of plants in Order Asparagales, taking its name from the Irises. It includes a number of other well known cultivated plants, such as the Freesia, the Gladiolus, and the Crocus.Members of this family are perennial plants, with a bulb, corm or rhizome. The plants grow erect, and have leaves that are generally grass-like, with a sharp central fold. Some examples of members of this family are the Blue Flag and the Yellow Flag.

Die Schwertliliengewächse (Iridaceae) bilden eine weltweit verbreitete Familie der einkeimblättrigen Pflanzen (Liliopsida). Die bekanntesten Gattungen sind Schwertlilien und Gladiolen. Die ausdauernden krautigen Pflanzen können von anderen Einkeimblättrigen vor allem durch die Schwertblätter, deren Ober- und Unterseite morphologisch gleich sind und die Blüten mit drei Staubblättern sowie (außer in der Gattung Isophysis) einem unterständigen Fruchtknoten unterschieden werden.

Le Iridaceae sono una famiglia di piante monocotiledoni, dell'ordine delle Liliales secondo la classificazione di Cronquist, o delle Asparagales secondo la classificazione filogenetica, che comprende circa 1800 specie e 92 generi, originari prevalentemente delle regioni tropicali del Sud Africa e America centro-meridionale, ma diffusi anche nelle regioni temperate, in Italia crescono spontanee una cinquantina di specie comprese in 5 generi.
