Ion implantation is a materials engineering process by which ions of a material are accelerated in an electrical field and impacted into a solid. This process is used to change the physical, chemical, or electrical properties of the solid. Ion implantation is used in semiconductor device fabrication and in metal finishing, as well as various applications in materials science research. The ions alter the elemental composition of the target, if the ions differ in composition from the target, stop in the target and stay there. They also cause much chemical and physical change in the target by transferring their energy and momentum to the electrons and atomic nuclei of the target material. This causes a structural change, in that the crystal structure of the target can be damaged or even destroyed by the energetic collision cascades. Because the ions have masses comparable to those of the target atoms, they knock the target atoms out of place more than electron beams do. If the ion energy is sufficiently high (usually tens of MeV) to overcome the coulomb barrier, there can even be a small amount of nuclear transmutation.

Die Ionenimplantation ist ein Verfahren zur Einbringung von Fremdatomen (in Form von Ionen) in ein Grundmaterial (Dotierung). Auf diese Weise lassen sich die Materialeigenschaften (meistens die elektrischen Eigenschaften) des Grundmaterials ändern. Das Verfahren wird unter Anderem in der Halbleitertechnik genutzt. Entsprechende Anlagen zur Ionenimplantation werden als Ionenimplanter bezeichenet.

L'implantation ionique est un procédé d'ingénierie des matériaux. Comme son nom l'indique, il est utilisé pour implanter les ions d'un matériau dans un autre solide, changeant de ce fait les propriétés physiques de ce solide. L'implantation ionique est utilisée dans la Fabrication des dispositifs à semi-conducteurs, pour le traitement de surface des métaux, ainsi que pour la recherche en science des matériaux. Les ions permettent à la fois de changer les propriétés chimiques de la cible, mais également les propriétés structurelles car la structure cristalline de la cible peut être abîmée ou même détruite.

Implantacja jonów – domieszkowanie materiałów polegające na rozpędzeniu jonów w polu elektrycznym i zderzeniu z domieszkowanym materiałem. Jony metali (najczęściej grupy III i V) uderzając w półprzewodnik niszczą jego strukturę krystalograficzną. Dlatego też niezbędny jest później proces wygrzewania poimplantacyjnego, który ma za zadanie odbudowę struktury oraz aktywację elektryczną domieszki. Głębokość domieszkowania zależy od energii jonów w czasie zderzenia, masy jonu, rodzaju podłoża a także od kierunku padania wiązki na płytkę podłożową.
