International Phonetic Association

The International Phonetic Association (IPA, French: L'Association Phonétique Internationale (API)) is an organization that promotes the scientific study of phonetics and the various practical applications of that science. The IPA’s major contribution to the academic community is the International Phonetic Alphabet—a notational standard for the phonetic representation of all languages. The acronym IPA is used to refer to both the Association and the Alphabet. The Association also publishes the Journal of the International Phonetic Association.

L'Association phonétique internationale (API) est une organisation qui encourage l'étude scientifique de la phonétique et les applications pratiques diverses de cette science. Sa contribution principale à la communauté académique est l'Alphabet phonétique international (qui a le même sigle), une collection normalisée des symboles pour la transcription phonétique de toutes les langues du monde. Międzynarodowe Towarzystwo Fonetyczne (ang. International Phonetic Association – IPA, fr. L'Association Phonétique Internationale; początkowo Dhi Fonètik Tîcerz' Asóciécon) – stowarzyszenie powstałe w 1886 roku w Paryżu, z inicjatywy grupy nauczycieli języków z Wielkiej Brytanii, Francji, Danii oraz Niemiec. Jego celem jest szerzenie wiedzy na temat fonetyki jako dyscypliny naukowej oraz promowanie różnych praktycznych zastosowań tej nauki. W tym celu Towarzystwo opracowało i propaguje Międzynarodowy Alfabet Fonetyczny.
