International law can refer to three distinct legal disciplines.public international law, which involves for instance the United Nations, maritime law, international criminal law and the Geneva conventions.private international law or conflict of laws, which addresses the question of which legal jurisdiction cases may be heard insupranational law or the law of supranational organizations, which concerns at present regional agreements where the special distinguishing quality is that laws of nation states are held inapplicable when conflicting with a supranational legal system.

Der Begriff Völkerrecht bezeichnet die Rechtsordnung, die die Beziehungen zwischen den Völkerrechtssubjekten regelt. Das Völkerrecht wird neben dem Internationalen Privatrecht auch als internationales Recht bezeichnet. Das supranationale Recht stellt eine besondere Ausformung des Völkerrechts dar.Von überragender Bedeutung für das Völkerrecht ist heute die Charta der Vereinten Nationen, weshalb sie von einigen Autoren auch als Verfassung der Völkerrechtsgemeinschaft bezeichnet wird. Sie hat, zumindest für die Mitglieder der Vereinten Nationen, Vorrang gegenüber anderen internationalen Übereinkünften (Artikel 103 UN-Charta).

Internationaal recht (ook wel bekend als Volkenrecht) is een van de rechtsgebieden die op dit moment het meest in ontwikkeling is. Hoewel internationaal privaatrecht ook onderdeel uitmaakt van het internationaal recht, wordt meestal het internationaal publiekrecht bedoeld als over internationaal recht gesproken wordt.
