International Federation of the Phonographic Industry

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) is the organisation that represents the interests of the recording industry worldwide. Its secretariat is based in London, UK.It represents more than 1,450 record companies, large and small, in 75 different countries. Its stated policies are to fight music piracy; promote industry-friendly copyright laws; and lobby for legal conditions believed to be in the interest of recording companies, including DRM.The chief executive and chairman of IFPI is John Kennedy OBE, who has worked in the industry for more than 30 years and was one of the co-producers of Live Aid and Live8.

Die International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) ist der Weltverband der Phonoindustrie. Die deutsche Sektion wurde 1958 gegründet.Aufgabe der IFPI ist u. a. die Wahrung der Urheberrechte international, wobei die IFPI-Mitglieder die Interessenvertreter der Phonoindustrie gegenüber der Politik national wie international sind. Für Europa, Lateinamerika und Südostasien bestehen zusätzliche IFPI-Organisationen. Eine weitere wichtige Aufgabe sieht die IFPI in der Bekämpfung von „Musikpiraterie“. Besondere Bedeutung hat darüber hinaus in den letzten Jahren die technische und rechtliche Umsetzung des weltweiten Musikhandels über das Internet und andere digitale Medien bekommen. Ebenso setzt sich die IFPI stark für die Vorratsdatenspeicherung ein.

Den svenska avdelningen, IFPI Svenska Gruppen, består av de största svenska skivbolagen som tillsammans står för 95% av den svenska skivmarknaden. De delar ut det kända svenska musikpriset Grammis.
