Interchange File Format

Interchange File Format (IFF), is a generic file format originally introduced by the Electronic Arts company in 1985 (in cooperation with Commodore-Amiga) in order to ease transfer of data between software products produced by different companies. IFF files do not have any common extension. Most files with .iff extension are in fact ILBM files, wrongly named so because they are the most common IFF files and most assume that they are the only type of IFF files (on many systems that produce IFF files, file extensions are not important).

Das Interchange File Format (IFF) wurde von der Firma Electronic Arts als Standard-Dateiformat in ihren Produkten eingeführt.Es handelt sich dabei eigentlich um eine ganze Familie von Dateiformaten, die sich durch eine gemeinsame Struktur auszeichnen.Das wohl bekannteste ist IFF-ILBM, ein planares Bitmap-Grafikformat (ursprünglich nur für 8 Bit, später auf 24/32 Bit erweitert), das auf Amiga-Rechnern benutzt wird. Das Malprogramm Deluxe Paint trug wesentlich zur Verbreitung des Formats bei. Nachdem Deluxe Paint - neben Atari ST - auch für IBM-PC portiert wurde, fand auch das IFF-Format eine neue Heimat und weitere Verbreitung, auf PCs wird meistens die Dateiendung .LBM benutzt. Ein ähnlich bekanntes IFF-Dateiformat ist AIFF, das auf Macintoshs häufigste Format für Audio-Dateien.

Interchange File Format, o IFF, è un formato di file creato da Electronic Arts nel 1985 per gestire in modo simile tipi di file di diverso formato e permettere ai più vari programmi di utilità di adoperare questi file nel loro contesto di lavoro, ad esempio un programma di scrittura con caratteristiche multimediali, avrebbe potuto caricare sia file IFF di immagini IFF/LBM (interleaved Bitmap), sia file IFF audio IFF/SND e creare così file IFF di testo (IFF/FTXT) che sarebbero stati documenti con un contenuto multimediale.

Interchange File Format (IFF) — стандарт для файлов обмена данными, разработанный в 1985 фирмой Electronic Arts совместно с Commodore для новой платформы — Amiga — с целью упростить обмен данными между ПО различных производителей. Может содержать любые данные (звук, графику, текст и прочее).Данный формат послужил основой для создания некоторых других форматов данных (см. ниже список форматов файлов в разделе См. также), а также сам по себе может быть известен под различными названиями (в зависимости от расширения файла — (I)LBM, AIFF, 8SVX и другие)

Interchange File Format (IFF), es un formato de archivo originalmente introducido por la compañía Electronic Arts en 1985 (en cooperación con Commodore Amiga) con el objetivo de facilitar la transferencia de datos entre programas de software producidos por empresas diferentes. Los ficheros IFF no tienen una extensión definida. La mayoría de archivos con extensión .iff son archivos ILBM, nombrados de manera incorrecta ya que este tipo de archivos son los archivos IFF más comunes y la mayoría asumen que es el único tipo de archivos referidos a este estándar (en la muchos sistemas que trabajan con archivos IFF, las extensiones de archivos no son importantes).
