An Instrument is a tool, intended for a purpose other than mechanical work, in particular a refined one.Musical instruments are devices designed to produce music, frequently by plucking or striking a string or bell or drum surface, or by forcing air to resonate (see wind instrument).Scientific instruments are devices intended to assist in the conduct of science. Meetinstrumenten zijn instrumenten die zijn gemaakt om waarden (lengte, temperatuur, tijd, druk etc.) of eigenschappen (smeltpunt, brekingsindex etc.) te bepalen.Wetenschappelijke instrumenten is een classificatie binnen de belastingwetgeving voor meetinstrumenten die (uitsluitend) zijn bedoeld om te helpen bij wetenschappelijk onderzoek.Psychometrisch instrument is een verzameling vragen of observaties die erop gericht is bij mensen een specifieke eigenschap of attitude in kaart te brengen.Medische instrumenten zijn bedoeld voor de diagnose en behandeling van ziekten; sommige medische instrumenten zijn ook meetinstrumenten.Optische instrumenten worden gebruikt in de fotografie en microscopologie.Financiële instrumenten zijn contractuele afspraken die erop gericht zijn een bepaalde financiële realiteit tot stand te brengen zoals het verschaffen van kapitaal of het overdragen van risico.
