IndyCar Series

The IndyCar Series is the premier series of the Indy Racing League. Due to the legal settlement with CART, the IRL was unable to utilize the name until the beginning of the 2003 season. From 1996-1997, the premier series was simply referred to as the Indy Racing League, with no genre designation. From 1998-1999, the series garnered its first title sponsor, and was advertised as the Pep Boys Indy Racing League. The contract was not renewed after the second year. In 2000, the series sold its naming rights to Internet search engine Northern Light for five seasons, and the series was named the Indy Racing Northern Light Series. After only two seasons, however, the sponsorship agreement ended when Northern Light reevaluated its business plan and ended all sponsorships [1]. Incidently, this name had been causing some mild confusion, due to the open-wheel developmental series called "Indy Lights".

L'IndyCar Series est depuis 1996 le principal championnat organisé par l'Indy Racing League. Pour des raisons juridiques, il ne porte ce nom que depuis depuis la saison 2003. Depuis le 22 février 2008 et l'annonce de sa fusion avec le Champ Car, l'IndyCar Series est l'unique championnat majeur de courses de monoplaces en Amérique du Nord.

Die Indy Car Series ist eine Motorsportserie aus den USA. Sie hat sich 1996 als Indy Racing League (IRL) von der CART und dessen damaliger IndyCar World Series abgespaltet und steht seitdem in direkter Konkurrenz zu dieser Serie. Die IRL wurde auf das Betreiben von Tony George, einem Rennstallbesitzer und Inhaber des Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) gegründet, der seine Rennstrecke und die berühmten  Indianapolis 500 in der IndyCar World Series nicht mehr ausreichend vertreten sah. Die entstandene Formelrennserie richtete bis 2004 ausschließlich auf Ovalstrecken Rennen aus. Seit 2005 werden auch Stadt- und Rundkurse gefahren. Der Höhepunkt der Serie sind aber nach wie vor die 500 Meilen von Indianapolis.

La IRL, o Indy Racing League, es el organismo sancionador de la actual competencia automóvilística de monoplazas IndyCar, uno de los dos más importantes campeonatos estadounidenses de bólidos monoplaza de ruedas descubiertas. IRL es propiedad de Hulman & Co. que también posee el Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Fue fundada en 1994 por Tony George y empezó a correr en el año 1996.
