Styl ten pojawił się w połowie lat 70. w Wielkiej Brytanii (zespół Throbbing Gristle i prowadzona przez jego członków wytwórnia płytowa Industrial Records, a także Cabaret Voltaire, Coil, SPK, Dome, Duet Emmo) równolegle z rockowym nurtem punk, z którym łączyła go brudna, agresywna stylistyka, krytyka istniejącego systemu społecznego i przekonanie o tym, że każdy może tworzyć muzykę. Na przełomie lat 70. i 80. industrial rozprzestrzenił się także w innych krajach - Niemczech (Einstürzende Neubauten), USA (Suicide, NON), Australii (Foetus), Kanadzie (Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly), Anglii (Coil), Słowenii (Laibach), Belgii (Front 242), Włoszech (Maurizio Bianchi).

Sostanzialmente si tratta di una derivazione dal krautrock meno legato alla forma canzone, come quello di gruppi quali Faust e Neu!, ma pesano sul genere influenze extramusicali quali le avanguardie artistiche del primo 900 (come il dadaismo, il situazionismo, e soprattutto la performance art), i libri di autori come Philip Dick e James Graham Ballard e tutte quelle sottoculture dedicate all'esoterismo e/o alle paranoie cospirazionistiche.
