Arabic numerals, Hindu-Arabic numerals , Indo-Arabic numerals, Hindu numerals, European numerals or Western numerals are the ten digits (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9). They are descended from the Hindu-Arabic numeral system in which a sequence of digits such as "975" is read as a numeral. The Indian numerals were adopted by the Persian mathematicians in India, and passed on to the Arabs further west. They were transmitted to Europe in the Middle Ages. The use of Arabic numerals spread around the world through European trade, books and colonialism. Today they are the most common symbolic representation of numbers in the world.

Les chiffres arabes, qui furent d'abord utilisés en France puis dans toute l'Europe et enfin dans le monde entier, ont été empruntés aux Arabes, qui les avaient eux-mêmes empruntés aux Indiens. Il faut savoir qu'actuellement plusieurs pays arabes n'utilise pas ces chiffres (0, 1, 2...) mais plutot les chiffres arabo-indiens.

Arabialaiset numerot (myös intialaiset numerot tai intialaisarabialaiset numerot) ovat nykyään yleisin tapa esittää lukuja kirjallisesti. Tässä järjestelmässä luvut muodostetaan numeroista 0–9 sekä desimaalierottimesta, joka on maasta riippuen yleensä pilkku tai piste. Lukuun peräkkäin kirjoitetuista numeroista oikeanpuoleisin on vähiten merkitsevä ja merkitys kasvaa vasemmalle mennessä kantaluvun verran. Eli esim. 123 tarkoittaa samaa kuin 3 + 2 × 10 + 1 × 100. Vastaavasti desimaalierottimen oikealla puolella olevat numerot ilmaisevat luvun osia. Desimaalierotinta ei aina merkitä näkyviin.
