Indian subcontinent

This article deals with the geophysical region in Asia. For geopolitical treatments, see South Asia. The Indian subcontinent is a large section of the Asian continent consisting of countries lying substantially on the Indian tectonic plate. These include countries on the continental crust—  India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and parts of Afghanistan, Nepal and Bhutan, island countries on the continental shelf—Sri Lanka, and island countries rising above the oceanic crust—Maldives. The term subcontinent signifies "having a certain geographical or political independence" from the rest of the continent, or "a vast and more or less self-contained subdivision of a continent." There is no agreement on what constitutes a subcontinent.

Le sous-continent indien est une zone géographique de l'Asie du Sud, encore appelé autrefois Hindoustan ou Inde cisgangétique, où se trouvent les pays suivants :le Bangladesh le Bhoutan la Birmanie (plus souvent rattachée à l'Asie du Sud-Est)l'Inde les Maldives le Népal le Pakistan  le Sri Lanka  ou des parties de leur territoire ainsi que certains territoires contestés actuellement sous contrôle de la Chine.

Als Indischer Subkontinent (India) wird die Landmasse südlich des Himalayas bezeichnet, auf der die Staaten Bangladesch, Bhutan, Indien, Nepal, Pakistan und Sri Lanka liegen. Die Bezeichnung rührt daher, dass es sich hierbei um eine von der eurasischen Platte getrennte Kontinentalplatte handelt, die im Verlauf der Erdgeschichte lange selbstständig durch den indischen Ozean driftete. Bei ihrem Zusammenstoß mit Asien wurde der Himalaya aufgetürmt.In der Umgangssprache wird auch die verkürzende Bezeichnung „der Subkontinent“ verwendet, da es sich um das einzige derartige Objekt handelt, das häufig so genannt wird.

Het Indisch Subcontinent is het gebied in Zuid-Azië waarin de landen India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka en delen van Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar en China liggen. In Pakistan wordt het subcontinent ook wel het Indo-Pak Subcontinent genoemd.Geologisch wordt het gebied een subcontinent genoemd, aangezien het gebied op een eigen tektonische plaat ligt, de Indische plaat, waardoor het gebied van de rest van Azië wordt afgezonderd. Het zuidelijke gebied van het subcontinent vormt een enorm schiereiland, terwijl het in het noorden wordt afgescheiden van China en Mongolië door de Himalaya. Deze bergketen werkte ook als een culturele grens tussen het subcontinent en de rest van Azië.
