Improvisation

Improvisation is the practice of acting and reacting, of making and creating, in the moment and in response to the stimulus of one's immediate environment. This can result in the invention of new thought patterns, new practices, new structures or symbols, and/or new ways to act. This invention cycle occurs most effectively when the practitioner has a thorough intuitive or technical understanding of the necessary skills and concerns within the improvised domain.

Improvisation (v. ital.: improvviso unerwartet, aus lat.: im (kehrt den Sinn des angeschlossenen Wortes um); proviso vorhersehen) bedeutet, etwas ohne Vorbereitung, aus dem Stegreif oder ad hoc dar- oder herzustellen. Per improvvisazione si intende – in senso generico - l’atto di creare qualche cosa mentre la si esegue, in maniera spontanea o casuale.I contesti in cui il termine improvvisazione viene più spesso utilizzato sono la musica il teatro, ma anche la danza, la pittura e numerose altre forme artistiche.

In muziek is sprake van improvisatie (naar het Latijn: onvoorzien), wanneer de muziek niet of niet geheel van tevoren is vastgelegd, en door musici tijdens de uitvoering spontaan wordt verzonnen. In de muziek wordt de term improvisatie gebruikt als tegendeel van de term compositie, waarbij een muziekstuk geheel of bijna geheel is vastgelegd.
