Imperial units
The system of imperial units or the imperial system (also known as British Imperial) is the system of units first defined in the British Weights and Measures Act of 1824, which was later refined (until 1959) and reduced. The system came into official use across the British Empire. By the late 20th century, most nations of the former empire had officially adopted the metric system as their main system of measurement, although as of 2011 the United Kingdom had only partially adopted it.

Brits-Amerikaans maatsysteem
Het Brits-Amerikaanse maatsysteem in het Engels Imperial Standard System geheten, is een Engels systeem van maten en gewichten, met als standaard lengtemaat de yard, standaard gewicht de pond en als standaard inhoudsmaat de imperial gallon.
De volgende Anglo-Amerikaanse maatsystemen hebben allemaal hun oorsprong in oudere Engelse systemen en werden vóór de invoering van het metrische systeem ook in andere Gemenebest-staten gebruikt (het Imperial Standard System van 1824). Tegenwoordig zijn het vrijwel alleen de Verenigde Staten die de eenheden van dit systeem (de customary units) gebruiken, terwijl deze gedeeltelijk in de 20e eeuw en tot ver in de 19e eeuw ook in het Verenigd Koninkrijk en haar koloniën werden gebruikt.
