Illinois River

For other rivers with this name, see Illinois River (disambiguation).The Illinois River is a principal tributary of the Mississippi River, approximately 273 miles (439 km) long, in the state of Illinois in the United States. The river drains a large section of central Illinois, with a drainage basin of 40,000 square miles (104,000 km²). The river was important among Native Americans and early French traders as the principal water route connecting the Great Lakes with the Mississippi. The colonial settlements along the river formed the heart of the area known as the Illinois Country. After the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal and the Hennepin Canal in the 19th century, the river's role as link between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi was extended into the era of modern industrial shipping.

Der Illinois River ist einer der Hauptzuflüsse des Mississippi River, etwa 440 km lang, und entwässert ein Gebiet von über 100.000 Quadratkilometern. Der Flusse verläuft gänzlich innerhalb des US-Bundesstaates Illinois. Er hatte für die Indianer und für französische Händler des 17. und 18. Jahrhundert eine große Bedeutung als Verbindung zwischen den Großen Seen und dem Mississippi. Seit dem 19. Jahrhundert bildet er einen Teil des Illinois Waterways.

Illinois (ang. Illinois River), jeden z większych dopływów rzeki Missisipi, długości 439 km i z dorzeczem 104 tys. km. kw. Przepływa skosem przez środkową część stanu Illinois. W dawnych czasach ważna droga wodna Indian i francuskich traperów i handlarzy skórami, jako główny szlak wodny łączący Jezioro Michigan z rzeką Missisipi. Pierwsze osady wzdłuż jej biegu tworzyły tzw. "Kraj Illinois". Po wybudowaniu kanałów Illinois-Michigan i Hennepin w XIX wieku znaczenie żeglugowe rzeki zmalało.
