Ilithyia

Ilithyia —the Latin spelling—or more usually Eileithyia (Greek: Εἰλείθυια), was the Cretan goddess whom Greek mythology adapted as the goddess of childbirth and midwiving. Her name does not appear to have an Indo-European etymology, which for R. F. Willets strengthens her link with Minoan culture. "The links between Eileithyia, an earlier Minoan goddess, and a still earlier Neolithic prototype are, relatively, firm," Willets wrote. "The explanation is as simple as it is important. The continuity of her cult depends upon the unchanging concept of her function. Eileithyia was the goddess of childbirth; and the divine helper of women in labour has an obvious origin in the human midwife".

Eileithyia (auch Ilithyia; „die [zu Hilfe] Kommende”) war in der griechischen Mythologie die Göttin der Geburt.Eileithyia ist die Tochter des Zeus und der Hera. Ihre Geschwister sind Ares und Hebe.Als Alkmene ein Kind von Zeus erwartete, wurde Eileithyia von Zeus' Gattin Hera dazu verpflichtet, die Niederkunft zu verhindern. Brennende Eifersucht war der Grund dazu. Sie hasste den Säugling Herakles nämlich von Anfang an, auch später noch, als er der klassische Held war. Eileithya setzte sich vor Alkmenes Kammer und kreuzte Finger, Arme, sowie auch die Beine. Damit war eine Geburt nicht möglich, und Alkmene litt sieben Tage lang Höllenqualen, weil sie nicht niederkommen konnte. Ihre Magd Galanthis aber merkte etwas und rief aus: "Das Kind ist da, es ist ein Junge!" Eileithyia sprang entsetzt auf, um zu sehen, wie das passiert sein konnte, löste dabei ihren Zauber und machte die Geburt des Herakles endlich möglich.

Ilizia di Amniso (dal greco Eiléithyia), Eilithia, Eilythia, Ilithia, Eileithyia, Eileithyiai, o Eleuthia (dialetto cretese) è una figura della mitologia greca, probabilmente una divinità pre-olimpica, in taluni casi identificata dai narratori in forma plurale ("le Ilizie") (in particolare nell'Iliade). Nonostante nessun mito la vide protagonista, la citano numerose iscrizioni di nascite. Il suo nome appare in alcune tavolette di Cnosso redatte in Lineare B, che sono state analizzate attentamente e che mostrano la continuità di culto dal neolitico all'epoca classica. Una particolarità è che essa risulta essere l'unica dea minoica a non avere per nome un aggettivo sostantivato
