An icon (from Greek eikon "image") is a religious work of art, most commonly a painting, from Eastern Christianity and in certain Eastern Catholic churches. More broadly the term is used in a wide number of contexts for an image, picture, or representation; it is a sign or likeness that stands for an object by signifying or representing it either concretely or by analogy, as in semiotics; by extension, icon is also used, particularly in modern culture, in the general sense of symbol — i.e. a name, face, picture, edifice or even a person readily recognized as having some well-known significance or embodying certain qualities: one thing, an image or depiction, that represents something else of greater significance through literal or figurative meaning, usually associated with religious, cultural, political, or economic standing.

Ikone
Ikonen (von griechisch , , „Bild“, „Abbild“; im Gegensatz zu , , „Trugbild“, „Traumbild“ und , , „Urbild“, „Gestalt“, „Art“) sind Heiligenbilder der Ostkirchen, besonders der orthodoxen Kirchen des byzantinischen Ritus. Die Bilder sind kirchlich geweiht und haben für die Theologie und Spiritualität der Ostkirchen eine sehr große Bedeutung. Der Zweck der Ikonen ist, Ehrfurcht zu erwecken und eine existenzielle Verbindung zwischen dem Betrachter und dem Dargestellten zu sein, indirekt auch zwischen dem Betrachter und Gott. Ikonen werden in der Orthodoxen Kirche weder als Kunstgegenstände noch als Dekoration angesehen, sind aber wesentlicher Bestandteil der Byzantinischen Kunst.

Icône (religion)
Une icône, du grec εικόνα (eikona) «image », est une représentation de personnages saints dans la tradition chrétienne orthodoxe. L'icône possède un sens théologique profond qui la différencie de l'image pieuse. L'icône est complètement intégrée dans la catéchèse orthodoxe mais aussi dans celle des Églises catholiques orientales qui ont préservé la tradition de l'Icône. En devenant objets de vénération pour les fidèles, les icônes ont été soumises, dès le siècle, par l'Église orthodoxe, à de sévères contraintes artistiques (sources d'inspiration stéréotypées, rigueur du trait, jeux des couleurs). Jusqu'à nos jours, ces canons se sont perpétués, assurant l'étonnante continuité de cette peinture dédiée à la gloire de Dieu.
