Iberian Peninsula

The Iberian Peninsula, or Iberia, is located in the extreme southwest of Europe, and includes modern day Spain, Portugal, Andorra and Gibraltar. It is the western and southernmost of the three southern European peninsulas (the Iberian, Italian, and Balkan peninsulas). It is bordered on the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea, and on the north and west by the Atlantic Ocean. The Pyrenees form the northeast edge of the peninsula, connecting it to the rest of Europe. In the south, it approaches the northern coast of Africa. It is the second largest peninsula in Europe, with an area of 582 860 km². The name "Iberia" was also used since the times of  Ancient Greece and Rome for another territory at the opposite corner of Europe, Caucasian Iberia, in modern day Georgia.

Die Iberische Halbinsel (oder Pyrenäenhalbinsel) ist der Teil Europas südwestlich der Pyrenäen. Spanien und Portugal sind die beiden heutigen Staaten auf der Halbinsel. Das Fürstentum Andorra liegt im Nordosten, an der Grenze zu Frankreich. Gibraltar an der Südspitze ist eine britische Kronkolonie.Die Iberische Halbinsel führt ihren Namen auf die Volks- oder Stammesgruppe der Iberer zurück, die dort in der Antike gelebt haben. Der namensgebende Fluss Ebro (Lateinisch Iberus) fließt vom Norden aus ins Mittelmeer. Iberia (Ιβηρία) war auch die griechische Bezeichnung dieser Gegend.Im Lateinischen wurde die Region Hispania genannt, wovon España und Spanien abgeleitet sind. Die römische Provinz Lusitania im Südwesten der Halbinsel erfasste den größten Teil des heutigen Portugals sowie Teile von Extremadura. Lusitania wurde daher zum lateinischen Namen Portugals, eingedeutscht Lusitanien.

Półwysep Iberyjski (Półwysep Pirenejski, hiszp. i port. Península Ibérica) to półwysep znajdujący się w południowo-zachodniej części Europy. Od pozostałej części kontynentu oddzielają go Pireneje, od zachodu i częściowo północy otacza go Ocean Atlantycki, a od wschodu i południa Morze Śródziemne. Od Afryki oddziela go Cieśnina Gibraltarska. Powierzchnia półwyspu wynosi 580 tys. km².

La Penisola iberica costituisce l’estremità sud-occidentale del continente europeo, si estende per 582.925 km² e ospita attualmente circa 55 milioni di abitanti. È costituita dai territori di Spagna, Portogallo, Gibilterra, Andorra. Si deve ai Greci il toponimo Iberia, già citato da Erodoto nel V secolo a.C., ad indicare popolazioni stanziate presso un fiume (iber, forse l'Ebro, ma non necessariamente). I Romani latinizzarono questo nome in Hiberia, tuttavia denominarono sempre le loro province iberiche come Hispania, utilizzando il toponimo cartaginese Span o Spania, forse con il significato di occulto (per indicare un paese nascosto o remoto).
