Information technology (IT), as defined by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), is "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware." IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit and retrieve information, securely.

Informationstechnik (IT) ist ein Oberbegriff für die Informations- und Datenverarbeitung sowie für die dafür benötigte Hard- und Software. Häufig wird die englisch ausgesprochene Abkürzung IT [] verwendet. Die teils synonym benutzte Benennung „Informationstechnologie“ kommt aus dem Englischen und ist eine (häufig falsche) Übersetzung der englischen Benennung information technology, bezeichnet also die mit diesem Gebiet verbundene Technik oder Technologie. (Das englische Wort technology kann sowohl Technik als auch Technologie bedeuten und wird daher häufig falsch übersetzt, vgl. Falscher Freund).
