The English suffix -ism was first used to form a noun of action from a verb. For example, baptize (or literally derived from "to dip") becomes "baptism". It is taken from the Greek suffix -ismos, Latin -ismus, and Old French -isme, that likewise forms abstract nouns from verbal stems. An example is baptism, from Greek baptismos "immersion", derived from baptizein, a Greek verb meaning "to immerse". Its usage was later extended to signify larger organized systems and concepts —in  belief, ideology, doctrine, and ritual practice.

Un isme est un concept, le plus souvent idéologique, dont le nom se termine par le suffixe -isme. Le terme permet de regrouper et donc d'analyser ensemble des notions qui seraient normalement incomparables du fait de dispositions morales ou de préjugés sociaux, par exemple le marxisme et l'olympisme. Les ismes relèvent en effet de champs aussi variés que la science, l'art, l'économie ou la philosophie.

Das Suffix -ismus (manchmal auch in der Form -smus) ist ein Mittel zur Wortbildung durch Ableitung (Derivation). Das entstandene Wort bezeichnet ein Abstraktum, oft ein Glaubenssystem, eine Lehre, eine Ideologie oder eine geistige Strömung in Geschichte, Wissenschaft oder Kunst. Es kann sowohl an Substantive (Alkohol-, Putsch-) angefügt werden als auch an Adjektive (sozial-, extrem-), wodurch dann gleichzeitig neue Adjektive auf die Endung -istisch entstehen.
