An .ipa file is an iPhone application archive file which stores an iPhone app. It is usually encrypted with Apple's FairPlay DRM technology. Each .ipa file is compressed with a binary for the ARM architecture and can only be installed on an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. Files with the .ipa extension can be uncompressed by changing the extension to .zip and unzipping.
.ipa files cannot be installed on the iPhone Simulator because they do not contain a binary for the x86 architecture. To run applications on the simulator, original project files which can be opened using the Xcode SDK are required.

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is an alphabetic system of phonetic notation based primarily on the Latin alphabet. It was devised by the International Phonetic Association as a standardized representation of the sounds of spoken language. The IPA is used by foreign language students and teachers, linguists, Speech-Language Pathologists, singers, actors, lexicographers, constructed language creators (conlangers), and translators.

The open-mid back unrounded vowel, or low-mid back unrounded vowel, is a type of vowel sound, used in some spoken languages. The symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet that represents this sound is ⟨⟩, graphically a rotated lowercase vee (called a turned V, though it was created as a small-capital ⟨ᴀ⟩ without the crossbar), and both the symbol and the sound are commonly referred to as either a wedge, a caret, or a hat. In transcriptions for some languages (including several dialects of English), this symbol is also used for the near-open central vowel.

In linguistics, specifically phonetics and phonology, schwa (sometimes spelled shwa) can mean the following:

• An unstressed and toneless neutral vowel sound in some languages, often but not necessarily a mid-central vowel. An example in English is the vowel sound in the second syllable of the word sofa. Such vowels are often transcribed with the symbol <ə>, regardless of their actual phonetic value.
• The mid-central vowel sound (rounded or unrounded) in the middle of the vowel chart, stressed or unstressed. In IPA phonetic transcription, it is written as . In this case the term mid-central vowel may be used instead of schwa to avoid ambiguity.

Das Internationale Phonetische Alphabet (IPA) ist ein phonetisches Alphabet, das heißt eine Sammlung von Zeichen, mit deren Hilfe die Laute aller menschlichen Sprachen nahezu genau beschrieben und notiert werden können. Es wurde von der International Phonetic Association entwickelt und ist das heute am weitesten verbreitete Lautschriftsystem.

Das Schwa ist die lautliche und orthographische Realisierung des mittleren Zentralvokals, der sich artikulatorisch und akustisch etwa in der wohldefinierten Mitte zwischen den anderen Vokalen befindet. Im Deutschen kommt das Schwa in Wörtern wie Mücke und gegangen vor, wird jedoch orthographisch nicht von anderen Vokalen unterschieden. Da es kein eigenes Schriftzeichen für das Schwa gibt, ist den meisten Deutschsprachigen die Existenz dieses Lauts nicht bewusst. Hinzu kommt, dass Schwa-Laute im Deutschen in gesprochener Sprache häufig zugunsten eines als silbisch realisierten Folge-Konsonanten elidiert werden, so wird beispielsweise Tafel gesprochen zu Tafl.

L'alphabet phonétique international (API) est un alphabet utilisé pour la transcription phonétique des  sons du langage parlé. Contrairement aux nombreuses autres qui se limitent à des familles de langues, l'API est prévu pour couvrir l'ensemble des langues du monde. Développé par des phonéticiens britanniques et français sous les auspices de l'Association phonétique internationale, il a été publié en 1888. Sa dernière révision date de 2005.

Le terme schwa , qui est la transcription d’un mot hébreu (, suivant l’orthographe moderne) signifiant « vain » (comme « en vain », « vacuité »), est employé en linguistique pour désigner la voyelle neutre, centrale, notée [ə] en alphabet phonétique international.
