IMPRIMATUR

An Imprimatur is an official declaration from the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church that a literary or similar work is free from error in matters of Roman Catholic doctrine and morals, and hence acceptable reading for faithful Roman Catholics. Ordinarily an imprimatur is granted by the bishop of a diocese (after a declaration of nihil obstat has been granted by a theologian in regard to the work). On rare occasions, a bishop's imprimatur may be overruled by higher authorities within the Catholic Church; this happened twice in 1984 and again in 1998.

Das Imprimatur (lat. es werde gedruckt; auch Imprimi potest es kann gedruckt werden, in Österreich mit grammatischer und phonetischer Angleichung an Wörter wie Kandidatur, Registratur auch die Imprimatúr) ist eine Druckerlaubnis. Sie wird nach dem Korrekturlesen der Druckfahnen vom Autor oder Verleger eines Buches oder vom Künstler einer Grafik erteilt. Im engeren Sinne bezeichnet Imprimatur auch das Zeichen (Handzeichen, Stempel o.ä.) eines amtlich bestellten Zensors, etwa während der vormärzlichen Pressezensur.

La locuzione latina Nihil obstat quominus imprimatur, tradotta letteralmente, significa non esiste alcun impedimento al fatto di essere stampato.Questa espressione era utilizzata dall'autorità a ciò preposta dalla Chiesa cattolica per autorizzare la stampa di libri. Per brevità si usava riferirsi a tale autorizzazione semplicemente come Imprimatur. I libri ai quali essa veniva rifiutata venivano inclusi ipso facto nell'Indice dei libri proibiti. L'Indice è stato abolito da papa Paolo VI nel 1966.
