IMAX

IMAX (short for Image Maximum) is a film format created by Canada's IMAX Corporation that has the capacity to display images of far greater size and resolution than conventional film display systems. A standard IMAX screen is 22m wide and 16.1m high (72.6ft x 52.8ft), but can be larger. Currently, IMAX is the most widely-used system for large-format, special-venue film presentations. As of March 2007, there were 280 IMAX theatres in 38 countries (60 percent of these are located in the United States and Canada). Half of these are commercial theatres and half are in educational venues. The biggest "IMAX Dome" is in the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey. A variation of IMAX, IMAX Dome (originally called OMNIMAX), is designed for projection on tilted dome screens. Films can also be projected in 3D with IMAX 3D.

IMAX ist ein von der gleichnamigen kanadischen Firma entwickeltes Kino-System. Es verwendet das größte Filmformat weltweit. Die sich daraus ergebende hohe Auflösung ermöglicht Leinwandflächen von 500 m² und mehr in ausgezeichneter Bildqualität. Dadurch tritt der so genannte Vektions-Effekt auf: die Zuschauer fühlen sich, als wären sie Akteure des Films. Das Wort „IMAX“ entstand aus den Worten „Images maximum“, was zu Deutsch in etwa „größtmögliche Bilder“ heißt. Technisch wird das IMAX-System durch die Verwendung von horizontal geführtem 70-mm-Film realisiert.

IMAX (ang. Image Maximum) to jeden z alternatywnych systemów kinowych używany w przemyśle filmowym. Taśma filmowa IMAX ma znacznie większą rozdzielczość niż tradycyjna, ma szerokość 70 mm. Kadr jest ustawiony poziomo, a nie pionowo jak na taśmie 35 mm. Dzięki temu obraz może być wyświetlany na ekranie o wymiarach 22×16 metrów. Ekran ma proporcje 1 : 1,43.

IMAX (da Image Maximum) è un sistema di proiezione della pellicola cinematografica che ha la capacità di mostrare immagini con una grandezza ed una risoluzione molto superiore rispetto ai sistemi di proiezione classici. Le dimensioni standard di uno schermo IMAX sono 22 metri di lunghezza e 16 di altezza, ma l'estensione dello schermo può essere anche maggiore. IMAX è il più importante sistema di proiezione di pellicola su grandi schermi ad alta risoluzione, ed attualmente negli USA sta gradualmente sostituendo i multisala classici.
