An iceberg is a large piece of freshwater ice that has broken off from a snow-formed glacier or ice shelf and is floating in open waterSince the density of pure water ice is ca. 920 kg/m³, and that of sea water ca. 1025 kg/m³, typically, only one ninth of the volume of an iceberg is above water. The shape of the remainder under the water can be difficult to surmise from looking at what is visible above the surface. This has led to the expression "", generally applied to a problem or difficulty, meaning that the visible trouble is only a small manifestation of a larger problem.

Dryfują one ze strefy polarnej w kierunku niższych szerokości geograficznych i najczęściej mają charakter gór stołowych (płaska powierzchnia szczytowa i strome stoki).W przypadku, gdy góra lodowa "wywróci się", tzn. jej dotąd zanurzona część wynurzy się, zwana jest "górą lodową niebieską". Charakteryzuje się tym, że trudniej ją zobaczyć ze względu na ciemny kolor — za to zjawisko odpowiada warstwa soli, która rozprasza padające światło. Zderzenie z niebieską górą lodową było przyczyną zatonięcia najsłynniejszego statku transatlantyckiego świata - "Titanica" w nocy z 14 na 15 kwietnia 1912 r.

Un iceberg è un grande pezzo di ghiaccio staccatosi da un ghiacciaio o dalla banchisa e galleggiante alla deriva nel mare. Il nome deriva dalla parola tedesca berg che significa montagna più la parola inglese ice: ghiaccio). In italiano, può essere chiamato isbergo (adattamento proposto dall'illustre linguista Bruno Migliorini) o anche, a seconda dei casi, montagna di ghiaccio, ghiacciaio galleggiante, blocco di ghiaccio, ghiaccione ecc.
