The International Astronomical Union (IAU) unites national astronomical societies from around the world. It also acts as the internationally recognized authority for assigning designations to celestial bodies (stars, planets, asteroids, etc.) and any surface features on them, and is a member of the International Council for Science (ICSU). The main aim of the IAU is to promote and safeguard the science of astronomy in all its aspects through international cooperation. Headquartered in Paris, France, its individual members are professional astronomers from all over the world, at the Ph.D. level or beyond, and active in professional research and education in astronomy. The IAU maintains friendly relations with organizations that include amateur astronomers in their membership. National Members are usually those with a significant level of professional astronomy.

Die Internationale Astronomische Union, abgekürzt IAU, ist eine 1919 gegründete weltweite Vereinigung von Astronomen mit Sitz in Paris. Ihr Ziel ist die Förderung der Astronomie durch internationale Zusammenarbeit. Sie ist neben anderen ähnlichen Organisationen für andere Wissenschaftszweige ein Mitglied des International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU), das seinen Sitz ebenfalls in Paris hat. Mit dem Stand von August 2006 sind in der IAU 8858 Einzelmitglieder aus weltweit 85 verschiedenen Ländern sowie 62 astronomische Gesellschaften und nationale Akademien zusammengeschlossen.

Międzynarodowa Unia Astronomiczna (ang. International Astronomical Union; fr. Union Astronomique Internationale - IAU/UAI/MUA) - międzynarodowa organizacja zrzeszająca 9040 zawodowych astronomów (wymagane jest posiadanie co najmniej doktoratu) rekomendowanych przez odpowiednie Komitety Narodowe. Koordynuje działalność badawczą w dziedzinie astronomii na świecie, organizuje kongresy generalne co trzy lata (ostatni, XXVI, odbył się w sierpniu 2006 w Pradze), sympozja i inne konferencje specjalistyczne, prowadzi działalność wydawniczą i informacyjną (np. telegramy o nowych odkryciach). Zorganizowana jest w 37 komisji specjalistycznych grupujących się w 12 zespołach. Obecnym przewodniczącym MUA jest Ronald D. Ekers.
