Hypothèse
Une hypothèse est une proposition ou une explication que l'on se contente d'énoncer sans prendre position sur sa véracité, c'est-à-dire sans l'affirmer ou la nier. Une fois énoncée, une hypothèse peut être étudiée, confrontée, utilisée, discutée ou traitée de toute autre façon jugée nécessaire, par exemple dans le cadre d'une
démarche expérimentale.

Als eine Hypothese (
altgriechisch ὑπόθεσις (hypóthesis) - die Unterstellung, Voraussetzung, Grundlage) bezeichnet man eine Aussage, deren Gültigkeit bloß vermutet wird, die aber im Gegensatz zu einer
Spekulation nicht nur widerspruchsfrei und in Übereinstimmung mit dem allgemeinen Wissen steht, sondern auch begründet werden kann. Für Hypothesen ist es üblich, dass die Bedingungen angegeben werden, unter denen sie gültig sein sollen.

Hypothese
Een hypothese (Grieks: υπόθεση [upóthese] = veronderstelling) is in de
wetenschap een stelling die (nog) niet bewezen is en dient als het beginpunt van een
theorie, een verklaring of een afleiding. Het is mogelijk zeer veel bewijzen te verzamelen die een hypothese steunen, maar één enkel negatief uitvallend experiment is voldoende om de hypothese te ontkrachten. Volgens onder andere
Karl Popper moet een wetenschappelijke hypothese daarom
falsificeerbaar zijn: er moeten
experimenten denkbaar zijn die de hypothese onderuit zouden halen als de uitkomsten van dat experiment in strijd zijn met de hypothese. Voor heel wat hypothesen is de wetenschap niet ver genoeg gevorderd om experimenteel volledig uitsluitsel te kunnen geven over het waarheidsgehalte van de hypothesen.
