Hydrostatic equilibrium

Hydrostatic equilibrium occurs when compression due to gravity is balanced by a pressure gradient which creates a pressure gradient force in the opposite direction. The balance of these two forces is known as the hydrostatic balance.

The physical situation reached in some interior regions of stars and planets in which the forces acting on the material there are in perfect balance. This means that there is no bulk motion of material since everything is in equilibrium.
